You know the piece of metal that is behind your doorknobs? It is called a backplate, and if you are replacing your doorknobs, you should really consider purchasing a complete set, so everything matches. After all, you don’t want to have a brass doorknob with a plastic back plate. You can find all kinds of kits at your local hardware store or in department store hardware sections.
An exception to this rule is antique backplates. You can dress up an old doorknob with an even older backplate! A great place to find these is at antique stores and markets, and you can often get them for dirt cheap!

If you are going to install your own back plates, keep in mind the material that you will be working with, the method of installation, and the care after it is up. Make sure that you measure the space for the back plates very carefully so that you do not have to redo your own work. In some places, you can order the right size so that you do not have to do the cutting at home, but you must give them the perfect and exact measurements from the beginning. Ask for some tips on the material that you are using and do not be discouraged. You can do this yourself and you can do it well.

Back plates can be the area behind the kitchen stove or behind the sink and are frequently referred to as other names such as a back splash. They are used to protect the area from water or grease splashes. Back plates can be a great way to add more flavor to the kitchen and should be complementary to the décor that is already in place as well as functional. For instance, a red and white toile kitchen would benefit from the look of a copper back plate. Blue would be set off with a shiny silver or matte gray plate as well.

Knob back plates, along with knobs, pulls and other cabinet and drawer hardware, are a great way to update your drawers and cabinets. Knob back plates are decorative plates that go behind a knob on a drawer or cabinet door. They are generally made of metal and come in a variety of styles and designs. Knob back plates also come in many finishes, such as chrome, nickel, bright brass, oil rubbed and rust. They also come in many shapes and sizes. Many have an oval or rectangular shape but there are also many round designs that mimic the shape of the knob they frame. The appropriate material and design of knob back plates is going to depend on your existing design elements wherever you are installing the back plates. Steel brushed silver-tone metals in oblong shapes look great in rooms or on furniture with a sleek modern design. Rust-colored knob back plates work for rustic, Western style designs. For vintage-looking glass or porcelain knobs, choose ornate knob back plates in a toned down finish. For a unique look, try a square set of knob back plates with a set of square knobs in a dark metal finish. Whatever your taste or style, knob back plates can be an attractive complement to new or existing cabinet or drawer hardware.

When buying hardware such as knobs, handles and pulls it is easy to get taken up by the looks of the items you are considering and forget the important part that the hardware plate plays in the final appearance. The hardware plate forms the background on which the handle or pull is seen and a matching hardware plate will add a look of completeness to the fittings. However practical considerations should not be ignored. The plates need to be tough enough to not get scratched by keys being put in the key holes and also not lose their finish be the constant touch and rub of hands on them.

The back plate is not just a functional item behind a door latch, handle or pull. The appearance of the back plate can affect the look of both the handle and the door itself. For example, if you want to highlight the door handle, choose a dull back plate that will highlight it.
