A door handle is a heavy use piece of hardware. It is subjected to constant pushing and pulling, often much harder than is required. A weak or improperly fitted door handle will soon become loose and can scratch or damage the wood around it. Once this happens repairing the wood is not easy. A door handle keeps getting dirty from all the hands that touch it. Rings and other hand ornaments can scratch the finish. It must be both easy to clean and scratch resistant. And of course, a strong solid looking handle will make the door itself seem stronger.

When buying hardware such as knobs, handles and pulls it is easy to get taken up by the looks of the items you are considering and forget the important part that the hardware plate plays in the final appearance. The hardware plate forms the background on which the handle or pull is seen and a matching hardware plate will add a look of completeness to the fittings. However practical considerations should not be ignored. The plates need to be tough enough to not get scratched by keys being put in the key holes and also not lose their finish be the constant touch and rub of hands on them.

If you’re considering redecorating your kitchen or bathroom, consider including some unique cabinet hardware into your project.  Cabinet hardware is available in nearly limitless designs, so your biggest issue will be making a decision.  You may want to start by considering some handmade pewter designs.  These often come in a variety of botanically or aquatically inspired styles made by skilled artisans.  Flowers are an easy design to incorporate into almost any household.  Trees, grapevines and bamboo may be a little more specific to certain interior decorating styles, but could provide you with a starting point in your overall redecoration project.  Another great type of cabinet hardware is that incorporating colored glass.  This includes some vintage or vintage reproduction designs.  While vintage knobs and pulls may be scalloped or geometrical, there are also pulls that have a simple, smooth rounded surface design.  These little bits of color look great on plainer cabinets.  Also great for plain cabinets is porcelain cabinet hardware.  Porcelain cabinet hardware often is embellished with painted or stamped designs.  Floral designs are very common, but if you’re looking for something more unique, look for porcelain knobs and pulls with stripes, polka dots, glitter or other designs.  These can be fun elements for a child’s drawer or cabinet.  Unique cabinet hardware is a great way to add something extra to your cabinets and since there are so many options, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste.

A small pull or knob may look elegant, but may make opening the drawer with a few fingers’ grip uncomfortable. Don’t let looks overshadow practicality.

Knobs, cabinet, door and other types, are fairly easy to install. If you are replacing old knobs, cabinet or other types, the easiest thing to do is find new ones that will fit using the existing holes. That will save you having to drill new holes and perhaps even buy extra plates to cover the old holes which the new knobs, cabinet or door etc. do not hide. But if you have to do some additional drilling, make sure that you have the right size drill bit. Using an oversize bit will result in a bigger than needed hole which can result in the screws getting loose more easily.

Chrome handles are available in a vast variety of designs but they are best used with modern decors. Chrome plating is a fairly modern process and chrome handles have been available for less than a century. Since this kind of bright plating was not available in earlier times, furniture was designed around brass, copper and bronze hardware and the coloring was done keeping the finish of these metals in mind. Since chromes handles convey a very contemporary look, they usually look out of place in any but a modern décor. If circumstances force you to use chrome handles with period décor, opt for chrome that is in a duller satin finish to reduce the contrast between the old and new looks.
